Introduction
Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in central Greece's Thessaly region, located near the town of Kalambaka at the edge of the Pineios river plain. It consists of a collection of Eastern Orthodox monasteries perched atop towering sandstone rock pillars, making it the most significant monastic center in Greece after Mount Athos. Visitors can hike old footpaths, tour the active monasteries, and take in dramatic views, including sunsets, from the rock formations.
