Introduction
Carrigogunnell Castle is a ruined medieval Irish fortification perched on a volcanic rock outcrop near Clarina village, on the banks of the River Shannon in County Limerick. Built by the O'Brien family in the mid-15th century, the castle dominates views over the surrounding countryside and Shannon river until it was destroyed in 1691 after the second siege of Limerick.
