Introduction
Biblioteca Joanina is an 18th-century Baroque library at the heart of the University of Coimbra, built by order of King John V and completed in 1728. It houses around 250,000 volumes, including rare works on medicine, law, and theology, displayed amid gilded woodwork and frescoed ceilings, and is regarded as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world.
