Introduction
Piton de la Fournaise is an active basaltic shield volcano on Réunion Island (a French overseas department), rising to about 2,632 metres and covering roughly 40% of the island's surface. It is the most visited tourist site on Réunion, reachable by road and hiking trails, and occasionally offers visitors the chance to observe active lava flows near Saint-Philippe.
