Introduction
Merdeka Square (Dataran Merdeka) is a large open square in Kuala Lumpur, situated in front of the historic Sultan Abdul Samad Building and the Royal Selangor Club. It is the site where the British Union Jack was lowered and the Malaysian flag raised for the first time on 31 August 1957, marking the country's independence, and it features a 95-metre flagpole, one of the tallest in the world.
