Introduction
Jerónimos Monastery is a former monastery of the Order of Saint Jerome in the Belém district of Lisbon, founded by King Manuel I in the early 16th century to commemorate Vasco da Gama's voyage. It is considered the masterpiece of Portugal's Manueline Gothic architecture, houses Vasco da Gama's tomb, and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
