Introduction
Okunoin is a sacred Buddhist site and cemetery on Mount Kōya in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, opened in 835 CE. It is Japan's largest cemetery, with over 200,000 tombstones lining a nearly two-kilometer forested path leading to the mausoleum of Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi), founder of Shingon Buddhism.
