Introduction
Danjo Garan is the sacred founding temple complex of Koyasan, established by Kobo Daishi in 816 as the birthplace of Shingon Buddhism on Mount Koya. Located on the western side of Koyasan, it features the striking 48.5m Konpon Daito pagoda, the Kondo main hall, Mieido, and a Shinto shrine, all set within a mandala-inspired layout amid tall cedar trees. It remains an active site where monks train and hold ceremonies, and is considered one of the two most sacred spots on the mountain alongside Okunoin.
